What is Smart City?
A City that intuitively adapts and respond to the needs of citizens. Under the concept of smart city, technology should be the last, not the first consideration. Citizen is the first consideration.
How do we understand the needs of citizen? This question could break down into three dimensions:
1) What problems are we solving?
2) Whose persona are we addressing?
(People who manage; live; travel in and out; doing business, these are all different personas)
3) How can the smart city be sustained?
→ What technology can address all of the above consideration?
Is there really a thing such as SMART City?
This is a vague concept that means so little for most people. In fact, city dwellers don’t want smart cities. They want safe, clean, pleasant, comfortable city, etc. Thus, the municipalities should make any effort to provide these needs, and technology is one way to do this.
Based on my point of view, I believe technology could make our lives better only when it meets three conditions:
1) The technology itself is mature enough and can be easily utilize by different personas
2) The technology itself is the best solution for its corresponding issue or problem. Meaning when there’s obviously better solution besides utilizing technology, we should choose the one which could effect a radical cure.
3) The technology has a supporting system that ensures all security problems are dominated by a powerful upright organization.
To me, smart city is not about changing the city into a tech-based or IoT-based environment, but about addressing “smart” (effective and feasible) solutions to the real questions.
